Big thanks to VST Planet for making this video
Otto used the VSCO2 Community edition to create this award winning song. Grats Otto!
Sorry for the issues with this orchestra. I've changed the name to the Sketch Orchestra and the checksums are now different so hopefully no more issues.
Here are packs of individual instruments made with the latest version of Maize Sampler. They should be fully compatible with VST2 & VST3 for both Windows and Mac. In short they should work with any DAW.

Win 32 Strings Brass Woodwinds Percussion Keys
Mac VST Strings Brass Woodwinds Percussion Keys
Mac AU Strings Brass Woodwinds Percussion Keys
Use the VST4Free link for the full rompler as my Mediafire version was removed again.
I know some countries can't access Mediafire and so the gentleman behind VST4Free has kindly agreed to provide another host for the project. This link is to the full Rompler, you can also browse bigcat instruments next to the '>' sign to get the individual instruments.
Note this needs Windows Vista or later, it won't work on XP.
The full Rompler creates a crash issue with Reaper. The individual instruments seem to work fine, so please try those instead if you use Reaper.
Thanks to Sam Gossner and his crew for this collection of samples. Thanks to Simon Autenrieth for the artwork. Take a look at the Community Edition on Sam's site. You can find the samples, SFZ versions and much more. If you enjoy the sound you might invest in the pro edition. I did and I'm quite enjoying it. The fun exotic instruments like wooden flutes, baroque recorders and unique brass along with more standard orchestra instruments and great percussion make it worth the price of admission.
Thanks to VST4Free for providing alternate hosting here.

Well Bigcat you've done it again, blown us away with you're purrfect magic.
ReplyDeleteThis stuff is awesome. Thanks for all the effort. Keep up the good work.
MAC USERS- When downloading depending on which you chose or both {VST} {COMPONENT} Your Mac may ask If you want to download as a VST / COMPONENT or ZIP Choose ZIP! Then unzip and Install. I made mistake of choosing VST and Component and they did not work- I downloaded again and chose ZIP and all is well
ReplyDeleteBIGCAT AWESOME STUFF! TY!
hello
ReplyDeleteall of your download links are unavailable in russia
is there any other way to download your instruments?
I didn't know that mediafire didn't work in Russia. Thanks for letting me know. I've asked another site if they would be interested in hosting the Rompler. If they are, I'll add a link to their site on the blog.
DeleteVST4Free is now hosting the Rompler as well slong with the individual instruments.
Deletehttp://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=VSCO2_Rompler&id=2734
I must not understand a "rompler". How do I install it, without an .exe?
ReplyDeleteJust find out in your DAW where the VST files are located and unzip the rompler zip file into that directory.
DeleteFor instance my main VST directory is C:\Program Files\Vstplugins . Your DAW should scan for VSTs on startup or you can tell it to rescan for VSTs.
Thanks Joe! I'll do that and report back....
ReplyDeleteDon't know what I'm missing but it appears all of the files are .mse not .nki
ReplyDeleteThis is the stand alone version, the Kontakt version is at...
Deletehttp://bigcatinstruments.blogspot.com/2016/07/vsco-2-kontakt.html
Gah! my mistake and thanks for the .nki link
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to use it with Avid Pro Tools 12 ?
Thanks ! :)
Sadly Pro Tools uses proprietary AAX format that Maize Sampler can't export in.
DeleteFortunately SForzando does AAX
https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando/
And the VSCO2 Community Edition is available for SFZ
https://github.com/sgossner/VSCO-2-CE/tree/SFZ
So you should be able to go that direction.
How do I set different instruments to different tracks in Reaper?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure. Maybe try asking on the Cockos forums as I know a number of guys there use this with Reaper and might have a good answer to the question.
DeleteDoes anyone else have a problem with using the Rompler in REAPER?
ReplyDeleteI saved a project with the Rompler loaded and armed and I'm not able to open the project anymore - it crashes every single time I try to load it.
I still can use the SFZ version, but I like the new GUI of the Rompler.
Also - great job on this VST guys, it's very good!
Unfortunately there seems to be an error where the specific instrument being used in the Rompler isn't being saved correctly in Reaper. The individual instruments seem to work fine.
DeleteThis is magical stuff Joe, I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your hard work.
ReplyDeleteI am having an issue where the V2 VSTs crash Ableton Live 9 Suite (32bit) instantly when I try to load them up. I have tried the complete orchestra, and the individual files. It is a slightly older version of Live - I tried a newer version on a friend's computer and they work fine - but it's impractical for me to upgrade Live on my own machine for a number of reasons.
Have you any suggestions for how I might fix it? I adore the new GUIs and articulation controls, I would love to be able to use these properly.
Many thanks,
DRMF
I'm sorry they aren't working for you. They are all made in Maize sampler and I must admit what happens after I put in the notes is pretty much magic too me. I'm just not sure what works and why.
DeleteYou could have fooled me - you've created some amazing stuff here!
DeleteCheers for getting back to me so soon in any case, I'll keep digging at it and let you know if I figure out why. Thanks for sharing such amazing work!
On a similar but different issue Sam Gossner (the sampled behind VSCO2) said this...
Delete"However, there is one possible workaround- try downloading an older Maize instrument, such as VS Upright or Bigcat's individual Sonatina instruments, then go inside the .instruments folder, delete the contents, an replace them with the contents of the .instruments folder of the VSCO CE set. I can't promise it will work, and it may require trying a few different older Maize VST's, but it might work."
It might be worth a try as these were made with a newer version of Maize Sampler and the older Sonatina instruments weren't.
You could try it with the the Sonatina Violin (I'm using you are using windows?)
http://www.mediafire.com/download/as60yv7i4z78h36/Sonatina_Violin_-_32.zip
hey, wondering if anyone has the same problem where the strings tends to go pizzicato in the middle of legato notes? I think it might be a glitch because the pizzicatoing notes vary with each playback on my daw (reaper). Would really appreciate help from anyone !
ReplyDeletethe pizzicato effect could also be a short stroke, but ive checked the notes in the midi editor, everything is normal [note length etc]
DeleteI asked your question on the reaper forums, maybe someone there can help out.
DeleteHey guys can someone upload the full version 2 rompler on google drive ? guys pls i really want someone to do this. ://
ReplyDeleteThe full version 2 ROMpler is already available above from Mediafire right below the UI above. It is also available on VST4free-
Deletehttp://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=VSCO2_Rompler&id=2734
I see your work is great, congratulations. But could you help me? I do not have much experience. I use windows 8 and my Daw is the Reaper. More like opening the instruments? Do I have to change MSE files? Thank you and a hug here from SP / BRAZIL.
ReplyDeleteSadly Reaper seems to have problems with the Rompler itself, however you can download and use individual instrument fine. Just unzip them into your VST directory which should be something like C:\Program Files\VSTPlugins . Then tell Reaper to rescan your VSTs.
DeleteEvil Dragon explains it here.

hello dear Joe Stevens
ReplyDeletethank you a lot for your great work .. I've download it and test it
but actually i would like to ask you one tech Q .. how you get the led signal meter to work cause when i export any meter from knob man and insert it .. it simply disappears .. your advice will be appreciated ..thanks
musicmonster2008@yahoo.com
I must admit to me all the scripting on this VSCO2 Rompler is magic. Sam Gossner and Simon Autenrieth from Versilian Studios gave me a couple scripts and the artwork and explained in small words how to make instruments using these assets.
DeleteSam and all kind of smart developers hang out at Scoring Central. I would try asking there or on the KVR Maize Forum where the very clever Sample Science hangs out.

thank you dear friend for your respond but i did ask help before in KVR and no body answer ..

i've worked last 2 years to creat & design some new sounds
and now it's time to back it and make it ready .
You might try contacting Sam Gossner and / or Sample Science directly via PM or some such. Sam has a posts on this thread and Sample Science is active on KVR. I can't speak for them but they are good, helpful guys.
DeleteHow wonderful it would be if there was a LinuxVST version, too!!
ReplyDeleteIf you're on Linux, check out Linux Sampler- it can load the SFZ version on the Versilian Studios website (all the exact same samples, just slightly different build direction), as well as Paul Battersby's excellent remix of VSCO, SSO, NBO and others, "Virtual Playing Orchestra".
DeleteThank you very much for this rompler!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it crashes my Reaper sometimes when I try to choose it in VST folder. I also downloaded separate instruments as it was suggested above, but they also crash Reaper when I am trying to put it on the tracks.
Any ideas how can I solve this issue? Thanks in advance
I'm sorry to hear that. It seems like Reaper can be very picky about what it wants to run and some versions seem to not work with VSTs made in Maize. They seem to run fine in my older version so I'm at a loss what to tell you. You might try asking on the Reaper forums. Again I'm sorry this has happened.
DeleteThis is truly amazing stuff! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteEvery time I go through the steps, my mac recognizes it as a PowerPoint file, and then I am just stuck. I'm trying to use it in FL 11.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of that before, that is an odd one. You should just be able to unzip it in the correct FL Studio directory and tell it to rescan and it should find it even if Mac sees it wrong FL Studio should still find it.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteFirst this VST sounds amazing. That's an amazing job.
But it seems like i'm encountering some problems with VSCO2 (rompler) and LMMS. The instruments are loading properly, but this is when i leave and reload the save that VSCO2 makes LMMS crash.
Is anyone else encountering this problem ?
Unfortunately LMMS can be unstable with Maize VSTis.
DeleteYou could try the individual instruments rather than the Rompler, but I don't know if that would help.
You might be better off trying the SFZ version, you can find info about that here...
http://vis.versilstudios.net/vsco-community.html
Alright, thank you for the answer !
DeleteI'm gonna try the SFZ version then.
What is the difference between a version 1 and version 2 instrument (for example version 1 flute and version 2 flute)
ReplyDeleteVersion 2 adds round robins for the short articulations and release times are shorter with reverb added. Version 2 looks nicer as well. Also the sustain samples generally attack more aggressively in 1 but are more gentle in 2.
DeleteHi ! I'm new to this. So I don't really know how it works. I've installed and scanned with the .dll file and Fl studio finds it but what am I supposed to do with the .mse files? Because Fl studio tells me that "there isn't any instrument" and that may be because he can't recognize the mse file but yeah.
ReplyDeleteHelp me?
thank you very much.
If you unzip the zip files into your instrument directory it should work. The mse file is the actual instrument and should be in a subdirectory.
DeleteThank you for your answer!
ReplyDeleteWell I already tried but it doesn't work :/
Sorry to hear that. You might try a single instrument rather than the Rompler and see if that works any better.
DeleteSo I finally managed to have them in the list of instruments on FL Studio. But even though I can see them, fix them etc, I can't play them. Like, when I touch my keyboard, there is no sound? But when I adjust them in the window I can hear the sound :/ I don't know if that makes sense
DeleteI'm sorry I use Studio 1 and I'm not really that familiar with FL Studio. You might ask on message boards specific to FL Studio.
DeleteI've downloaded the files from "Full Orchestra", but when I unzip there's no installer. What do I have to do?
ReplyDeleteI want to use the sounds in Finale2014
DeleteThis link seems to explain who to do it...
Deletehttps://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/225103168-Using-3rd-party-VST-AU-libraries-with-Finale-and-PrintMusic
thank you!
DeleteAny idea of how to download just .dll file for 32bits? I've 64bits one but the page from the link says Finale needs 32bits'file
DeleteThere is no way to download just the dll files as they are tied to the mse files.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI get an error when trying to place the .dll in my VST folder, it states "write error in file, probably disk is full" any idea what I can do to fix this?
ReplyDeleteThere are so many variables in computers it an be hard to trouble shoot them. You might need admin rights or to change permissions about who can write things to a directory or maybe your hard drive is full.
DeleteThe vst is recognised in cubase but it doesn't load any sound. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI doubt you're still looking for an answer. Nonetheless...
DeleteI had the same issue, but in Mixcraft 7. It did add the instrument automatically, but no sound. All I did was re-scan my VST folders in my settings/preferences and it worked.
Hey Bigcat,
ReplyDeleteI love everything this library has to offer! I'm running into a problem where when using this in logic, it tends to crash a lot. Also, whenever I open the session, the articulations I set for the strings always reverts back to Arco and I have to keep resetting the articulations track by track every time I re-open the session. Is this because I have the free version? Does the paid version have this glitch and take up less CPU?
Thanks!
Sorry you are having this problem. You might try the SFZ version.
Deletehttp://vis.versilstudios.net/vsco-community.html
You can also find out about the paid versions here and contact Sam who runs the company directly. I don't have anything to do with the paid version other than being a happy owner of the Kontakt version.
You should consider setting a keyswitch at the start of each track that specifies the articulation in use. This will fix your issue and save time in the future!
DeleteAlso, I noticed in some of the samples, there is some noise ot the performer adjusting in his chair or coughing. Is this also an issue with the paid version? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGood ear. I missed that. I quite enjoy the full version and haven't noticed any extraneous noises.
DeleteKeep in mind that all modern sample libraries from here to Spitfire have little noises (Spitfire in fact intentionally records them, as do many other companies now) in order to create more realism- the days of 'sanitized' samples are over. While we actively seek to minimize sounds by careful mic placement, instructions for players, specific clothing, and elimination of environmental noises, people are living (and worst of all, breathing) things that move around, sometimes without intending to. If you want absolutely pure samples, get a GM soundfont or a synthesizer to be honest, that's your best shot.
DeleteThe Professional Edition use the same sampleset, but with many more samples, more natural dynamics (note that Joe normalized many of the samples for his versions, which added lots of gain, bringing the noise floor up with it, but providing an arguably more consistent feel), multiple mic positions (which can isolate sounds), built-in filters and convolution reverb (to remove and mask sounds), and many other per-instrument tweaks and alterations (removing samples, combining articulations, equalization, hand-tweaking dynamics, etc.). The SFZ version is the closest thing available to the Professional Edition in the freeware realm.
Thank you very much!

ReplyDeleteHow to "put" themm on Cubase 5. please hellp im a beginner.
ReplyDeleteit said i have no instruments. where shouldi put the .mse files?
DeleteWhere ever Cubase looks for your instruments just put the rompler in that dirwctory and unzip it. The instruments should automatically go into a sub-directory. If the uzip doesn't work or it doesn't create the directory maybe you need to change permissions for the directory?
DeleteHow to "put" themm on Acoustica Mixcraft 7 . please hellp im a beginner.
ReplyDeleteAfter you unzip, copy the entire folder into C:\Program Files\Acoustica Mixcraft 7\VST. You might not have it installed to "C:\Program Files", but that'd be the default location.
DeleteIs it possible to use with Garageband 10.2?
ReplyDeleteI tried but it seem to be not possible, gb tells i need newer version to run
Deletewhat a pity
I have the instruments working in Garageband 10.2. I tried copying to the components folder in the MACHD/Library folder rather than the user/Library folder then I restarted my computer and the instruments simply became an option under 'AU instruments'.
DeleteHi, thanks for a great free resource. I'm hoping you can answer a question for me; I'm using the vst version in Samplitude Home Studio 2017 and while the instruments work, I can't get the 16 independent channels - whenever I change the instrument on one midi channel, they all change. From reading the samplitude manual there should be some controls on the vst interface to set up the channels, but I can't find them. Screenshots of the paid versions of the vst do seem to have extra controls - is this something that just isn't available in the community version or am I just missing something? Thanks, Jim
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I'm not familiar with Samplitude Home Studio. I think VSCO1 had the 16 separate channels. VSCO2 Rompler has always been single channel. I never do live stuff, I'm no musician, but I just put a separate instance in a separate track in my DAW.
DeleteThe Community editions here are made by a different company (me) than the Pro editions by Versillian (Sam and Simon). However I'm good internet friends with Sam and he and Simon let me use lots of their art assets and scripts and gave lots of advice. Also the Pro edition is for Kontakt Player which has way more features than Maize. I do a Kontakt version of community as well, but Simon is sooo much better than me as a scripter that it isn't even funny and of course the pro version has 10 times more samples so the Pro is way better.
Hi Joe, thanks for the prompt reply. It sounds like I haven't missed anything - if it's single channel I'm getting the behaviour you would expect. I've already managed to get a decent basic orchestra set up by using separate instances for each voice, but I'm limited to 16 altogether in Samplitude, so not much room left for additional solo instruments. Absolutely great for a free VST though! Cheers, Jim
DeleteI can see where that would be a problem. I know you can make Maize Sampler do the multichannel thing but I'm afraid I don't actually know how. I'm kinda like a DIY guy trying to fix a car by walking around hitting things with a hammer. If I can get it started I'm thrilled.
DeleteSample Science who is very clever is about to come out with Sample Science Player for free. It is pretty complex so it is taking a while, but it might be multichannel. He is smart enough to do it. Either way keep an eye out for it as it should be very nice and expansive.
Hi Jim, Sam Gossner here (Versilian Studios). Just wanted to chime in- Maize can do multi-timbral, but it has to be set up by the developer. The real issue is that for some completely unknown reason it routes all the MIDI CC data to all of the channels, so you can't automate your different instruments, even if you assign them to different channels. Furthermore, only the developer can assign channels and set up the multi-timbral behavior, so it's very limited for the end user. This results in glitchy, unpleasant playback in software like Finale and leaves lots of users scratching their head. If you want a multi-timbral use case, the best chance is either with the full version of Kontakt running Bigcat's Kontakt version or with ARIA running my .sfz version. If you don't mind learning sfz, you can also compile all of the sfz instruments into a single one and pre-define channels for each instrument, but that's a little advanced.
DeleteHi Joe, I just wanted to thank you so much for these files, and for all your work on this blog! It is truly excellent and greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteI have spent my whole life composing music in my spare time - some of it is quite epic, but I've never had the budget to take it beyond my cheap Yamaha keyboard. But now, thanks to DAWs + the free instruments being made available and distributed by kind souls such as yourself, I am finally in a position to hear my music come to life!
I also have a little feedback on your blog: Having looked through quite a few of your blog posts, I sometimes find the links a little confusing. Some of the links are credits, others are background information, demos, legal info, etc. Then you have the actual downloads which can be Romplers, instruments, .nki, .sfz, or mirrors of the above.
So generally, there are a whole bunch of different links and finding the right one can be confusing. For example, scattered throughout this particular article there are four different places where you can download the rompler. The first one is just individual instrument packs, but as for the other three, I'm still not entirely sure what the difference is? I guess they're mirrors.
If nothing else, I would like to encourage you to put the word "Download" before a link title, because when you've done that, it makes things much clearer. Without the word 'download' it just takes people's brains that bit longer to work out that the link they're looking at is a download.
But if I could make a further suggestion: perhaps when you create a blog post in future, you could gather all the download links into one place, like a box with the heading "File downloads". (Or have second box for "Mirrors"?) That way, you could still give links to all the credits, background info, and legal info, all contained in the normal text, but it wouldn't confuse people because we'd see the "Downloads" box and know that all the important download links were together in that box, and we weren't missing anything hidden in the text of the article. It's just a humble suggestion, but I really think that would make life a lot easier for people.
Finally, I notice your blog has no graphics or logo. Perhaps that's deliberate, but if you would like a hand with graphics, I'm a graphic designer and design logos for a living, so, time permitting, perhaps I could help.
Lee
Hi Lee. Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
DeleteYou are right it is confusing. I'm not the best organized and there was an invalid DMCA takedown order that caused problems for my file host. For quite a while the only way to get these was from my friend at VST4Free. I'm only now getting things back up with a name change and a different checksum. I'll try to reorganize a bit.
I've tried making the download links in bold and all other links italics. Maybe that will help?
Hello. I'm trying to use these instruments on a Mac, in either Protools 11.3.1 or Garageband 10.2 but so far neither program seems to load the files. I'm copying the AU .component files to users/chris/library/audio/plug-ins/components/. I've also downloaded the VST files and copied them to the VST folder without success. Maybe the instruments don't work with these programs..? Does anyone have a suggestion, even another program or means to access the sounds?
ReplyDeleteUPDATE: I have the instruments working in Garageband 10.2. I tried copying to the components folder in the MACHD/Library folder rather than the user/Library folder then I restarted my computer and the instruments simply became an option under 'AU instruments'.
DeleteGlad it is working for you. I must admit I'm not a tech guy and much of why things do or don't work is beyond me. I added your note to the blog entry hopefully it will help people who are having trouble getting it going.
